This dissertation focuses on the use of the “Less” with a capital L in spatial design. Rather than seeking to theorise a given movement, it aims to assemble and analyse the different architectural practices that promote simplicity, reduction, modesty and the essential, by simultaneously questioning ambiance, design and the role of the designer. An exploration of the notion of “less” in the act of creating spaces reveals six major themes that will serve as our point of entry: minimalism, ascetism, vacuity, frugality, demolition and finally vanity.
