This scenography offers up a dialogue between industrial, dilapidated 1980s’ New York and the musical references of Jean-Michel Basquiat. Throughout the exhibition, the visitor is invited to wander through a space with urban codes that represent the effervescence of New York at the time. The visit is punctuated by units displaying Basquiat’s vinyl collection. This becomes the common thread of the exhibition and offers visitors an opportunity to listen to the artists and musicians who inspired his work and to learn about the musical world of the seventies and eighties. Throughout the exhibition, urban exploration – the symbol of Samo’s performance – gradually yields to the display of his paintings, the pinnacles of his work.
