The Wallpaper Museum at Rixheim introduced us to the world of this art form, with its industrial past, used for many years as an element of interior decoration. Two key themes emerge: pattern and process, the artistic object and the technical object. This parallel and the duality between the two levels are a metaphor for the issue that is ever present throughout my dissertation, that of a mechanised piece of art. The wallpaper becomes the subject of an encounter between modern techniques and the concept of fashion held by a designer from the decorative arts sphere. Yet the world of wallpaper continues shatter the confines of the architectural framework to lead us into a dream world.
