Henry Geldzahler, a journalist for Interview Magazine asked to Jean-Michel Basquiat where he first started to paint. Basquiat replied that his first blank canvas was the “D” train that he took from Brooklyn to Manhattan. To exhibit Jean-Michel Basquiat’s art at the Philharmonie de Paris, we decided to recreate the D train, which will accompany visitors throughout the exhibition. Based on the principle of the “subway”, the six sequences of the exhibition will represent the six stops on the D, which the visitor will view one after the other, following the yellow line that will serve as a guide and a point of reference throughout the experience.
